Throwers Cage 2008
October 13, 2008
  •  Congratulations to Garry Bachman M86 who will be inducted into the Clarington Sports Hall of Fame on Saturday October 25th.  This is a great honour for Garry as it recognizes not only his outstanding performance at Riccione, Italy in 2007 winning Five Golds & a Bronze but also the many Canadian records (16 and counting) & 2 World Records he has set since starting Masters Throwers in 1984.  He has for many years been one of the top Masters Throwers in the World no matter what age class he is in.
  •  The Canadian Masters Throwers Results & Rankings to Oct 13/08 are now posted.  This will likely be the final ranking for the 2008 season.  If there are any results missing or errors, please email throwersclub@rogers.com  The Canadian Throwers rankings have also been posted on the OMTFA site at www.ontariomasters.ca
  •  The Throwers Club Awards booklet for 2008 is now posted.  Congratulations to all our awards winners.  After 6 unprecedented wins of the Challenge Trophy (most season points WP) & Latvian Cup (highest season score WP), Garry Bachman M86 gracefully stepped aside to move into the Throwers Club Hall of Fame with founder & patriarch Arvids Zakis.
  •  David Morris M70 is the 2008 winner of the Challenge Trophy.  He had a tremendous season breaking the Canadian Record for M70 Weight Pentathlon 5 times during the season culminating in his showdown in Regina with Emil Muller M73 where Dave set a new record of 3,561pts.  David's story is even more remarkable because in 2007 he had triple bypass heart surgery - click here to read about his story which is certainly very inspirational particularly to anyone who has health problems.
  •  Joe Myers M56 & Ray Bzidziak M54 became the first International members of the Throwers Club in 2008.  Joe Myers won the Latvian Cup & the Bronze medal for best individual points in shot put.
  •  Rudy Boghina & Renate Woerle received Special Service Awards for their dedicated service to the Throwers Club.  Rudy was very active in the Club Executive from 2003 until recently when he unfortunately had to resign due to health issues.  Renate has helped the Club for many years & is a regular official at the majority of our meets.

  •  Complete results for the OMTFA Championships held Jun 29th are available at http://www.ontariomasters.ca/event_results.php?rid=874&year=0.  The weather was great for the first three events but unfortunately heavy rain hit for the javelin.  In next year's meet we have to look at getting more officials on board & holding simultaneous sessions to get the competition completed in a more reasonable time.  This problem is a good one, though; it reflects the tremendous increase in participation in Masters throwing in the last few years.
  •  Canada is sending four throwers to the Olympics - Dylan Armstrong (shot put), Jim Steacy (hammer), Scott Russell (javelin) and Sultana Frizell (hammer).  This is the largest throwing contingent for Canada in many years.  Full results for the Canadian trials are available at http://www.athletics.ca/main.asp?page_url=/page.asp?id=247

  •  Disappointing news from Rudy Boghina that health concerns have forced him to substantially cut back on his activities with the Throwers Club & CMAA.  Rudy has been a pillar of the club since he took over as Co-Manager with Bill Pearson in 2002.  He has worked diligently to organize meets & raise the profile of our Club not only in Ontario but also across Canada.  After he was forced to stop competing in 2005, he continued his work with the Club including officiating, organizing facility repairs & planning the annual awards event.  His diligent work on the CMAA Throwing Records finally got the record book up-to-date.  He also did a lot of excellent work in updating the CMAA website as well as serving as the Throwers representative on CMAA.  We all thank you very much Rudy, & wish you well in the years ahead.  We hope to see you at some of our meets this year.

  •  Tech Talk column by Roman Olszewski in Jan/Feb Athletics notes several IAAF rule changes coming into effect Jan 1, 2008:

Rule 180 Field Events - General Conditions: an athlete may now place a marker on the ground behind or adjacent to the circle but outside the landing area.  The marker must be removed immediately after each trial.

Rule 188 Shot Put - Cartwheel techniques are not permitted.  Click to see how this is done!

Rule 191 Hammer - hammer handle specifications have finally been decided on.  The shape is no longer of primary concern.  It is now the amount of stretching or "deformation" of the handle that is important. No more than 3mm of deformation of the handle when a tension load of 38kN is applied.

Rule 221 Indoor Shot Put - a requirement has been added that protective netting of approx. 4m in height be installed to stop implements which are in flight or bouncing from the landing surface.
